How to set up a fingerprint reader

Hardware setup and initial configuration for using a fingerprint reader with Begin.

Fingerprint readers allow employees to clock in and out by scanning their fingerprint at a physical device. This article covers the initial setup. This feature is available to Admins.

Step 1: Connect the device

  1. Set up the fingerprint reader hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  2. Connect the device to your network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet, depending on the model).

  3. Ensure the device can reach the internet to communicate with Begin servers.

Step 2: Register the device in Begin

  1. Go to Devices in the left sidebar.

  2. Devices self-register when connected to your network.

  3. The device appears with its name and IMEI.

  4. Configure the device settings (object assignment, registration mode).

  5. Click Save changes.

Step 3: Configure biometric terminal settings

Go to Settings → Biometric Terminal to configure global settings for all biometric devices, such as:

  • Default registration behavior

  • Object assignment rules

  • Break registration options
